
Dr Oswell has over 40 years of international experience in pipeline geotechnical engineering and geological hazard assessment. A recognized expert in soil-pipe interaction, geohazard assessment, and strain-based design, he provides senior consulting and forensic expertise for major global infrastructure. Notably, his regional experience includes senior peer review on Malaysia’s Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP), alongside major energy systems across Canada, the United States, Russia, and China.
He specializes in managing complex soil-pipeline interaction challenges. Beyond active project consulting, Dr. Oswell serves as an expert witness in pipeline loss-of-containment and integrity cases and contributed directly to the ISO committee on geological hazard risk management for onshore pipelines.
An accomplished academic, Dr. Oswell is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary and an elected Fellow of both the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineers. He has published over 40 technical papers and authored the authoritative textbook, Soil Mechanics for Pipeline Stress Analysis. Throughout his distinguished career, he has delivered numerous international keynote addresses and served as a visiting scholar at Nanjing University. He has presented workshops at the University of British Columbia, Petronas Technical University (CAPE), China Petroleum University (Changping), and to pipeline operators such as PipeChina, Enbridge and others.
